The mighty mitochondria: Intracellular managers of the stress response

Presented by: Edda Medina

Tuesday, 18th September @ 7.00pm (SA time)

Current scientific and technological advances show a paradigm shift in understanding the role of mitochondria, not only within the cell but throughout the body. Mitochondria are now recognised as an integral part of a structural and functional network within the cell and do more than just produce ATP energy. They are also major integrators of cell signalling, regulating numerous physiological functions throughout the body, including inflammation and the response to psychological stress.

This webinar will outline a system view of the mitochondria and support the use of BioRegulatory Systems Medicine as part of a safe and effective clinical strategy for mitochondrial health and the treatment of chronic disease.

YOU WILL LEARN TO:

  • Recognise the important fundamental roles that mitochondria play in the stress response
  • Identify the systems view of mitochondria, including newly discovered functions and connections
  • List various perturbations of mitochondrial networks, including specific environmental toxicants and the clinical consequences of these perturbations
  • Understand how the principles and products of BioRegulatory Systems Medicine could support the health of the cellular energy network within mitochondria

Addressing inflammatory networks with BioRegulatory Medicine: Concepts and practical consequences

Presented by: Alta Smit

Non-resolving inflammation has emerged as a central theme in the pathogenesis of most chronic diseases. The most important aspect emerging from research is that using anti-inflammatory medication to reduce inflammation does not mean resolution and managing inflammation in a linear, suppressive way may not be the right strategy, and in fact may be detrimental. The role of acute physiological inflammation as a homeostatic mechanism needs to be revived.

We need innovative solutions and strategies to treat the underlying factors resulting in chronic non-resolving inflammation rather than just suppressing the inflammation. These solutions can be found in the systems medicine approach using bioregulation.

This webinar will present a different viewpoint on the management of inflammation.

YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Inflammation is not necessarily bad. There is a difference between suppression and resolution of inflammation, with therapeutic options to support resolution
  • The management of non-resolving inflammation needs to take causative factors into account, for example, the dysregulation of other biological networks
  • Possible therapeutic strategies to manage this very complex problem

The BioRegulatory approach to neuroendocrine disorders

Presented by: Alta Smit

Loss of allostasis and the development of disease involves interactions of neural, neuroendocrine and immune mechanisms, with dysfunctional HPA axis activation as a central mechanism.

The hypothalamus is a major control centre for the autonomic nervous system and coordinates links between the autonomic nervous and endocrine systems. When considered as an axis, along with the pituitary and adrenal glands, it is a central part of the neuroendocrine system that controls reactions to stress and many body functions, including mood, sexuality and the immune system. The HPA axis is usually controlled by an auto-regulatory feedback system, but when faced with chronic stress the body loses the ability to regulate its response.

This webinar will provide an update on the BioRegulatory approach to neuroendocrine disorders with special reference to clinical decision making.

YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Why low dose therapy is the preferred first step in treatment
  • The remarkable and unexpected results of recent research
  • Clinical prescribing tips for the treatment of neuroendocrine disorders with BioRegulatory Systems Medicine
  • Why the system that is most reactive to stimuli responds well to the BioRegulatory approach
